How to's of Draw Poker

Poker has many varieties and one of them is draw poker. In draw poker, every player is dealt with a full hand before the first betting begins. The hand is then built up for the succeeding round by changing the cards.

Most players learn the standard five card draw poker first since it is a common game played in homes. In this poker variation, two to eight people can play. Standard five card draw is not predominant in casinos and tournaments nowadays because it is considered a lowball type of poker.

The game starts with each player dealt with five cards each; cards dealt face down. The rest of the deck is put aside. The first round of betting starts with the player at the left side of the dealer. A draw begins in this round when more than one player remains. Each player has the option on how many to replace and remove from his hand. The number of cards a player removes from his hand will be number of burn cards dealt to him, so he will have a new set of five cards on this round. The second betting starts after the draw and a face-off follow if more than one player stands.

One common rule in places other than a casino is that any player cannot replace more than three cards, except if he draws four cards and he's keeping an ace. This rule applies only to low ball games. In casinos, the rule is different; a player cannot draw five succeeding cards from the deck. If the player needs to replace his five cards, he is dealt with four cards, and the other players are allowed to draw. If none of the other players draw, the dealer can give the other player his fifth card.

Another rule is that the base card from the deck is by no means given as replacement card. If the deck has been used up during the draw, except for the base card, the cards that were discarded will be given to the last players. For instance, the last player wants three replacement cards during the draw and there are only two cards left in the deck.

The dealer will give him the one card on top, and the base card will be shuffled with the other players' discarded cards and with the burn card if there is any. The last player's discarded cards are not included in the shuffle. The dealer will deal additional two cards to the last player.

Draw poker may not be as famous as other casino-based poker variations but the basic rules are simple to understand. It is always good to start with draw poker before learning the other variations.
